About

My name is Kait and I moved to the DFW at the age of five. I have spent the better part of my life as a north texan and I have always been involved in the arts. From a young age I became fixated on tactile sensory feedback, always wanting to touch every cloth, thread, yarn, anything I could get my hands on. This grew in to a love of textile art originating in knitting and then evolving in to embroidery in 2017. My favorite type of embroidery is needlepainting: using thread to create painterly images that mimic that of oil paint. The embroidery process has taught me to zoom out and allowed me to learn and enjoy other forms of fiber art and integrate them in to my work such as crochet, weaving, and needle felting. One of my goals is to constantly push the envelope of what people believe is possible with thread and find new ways to stitch and sculpt images I love in to textile reality.

Artist Statement

My work as Magpie Embroidery weaves a rich tapestry of femininity, humor, and cultural humility into fiber arts. Drawing from my deep appreciation for psychology and social work, I explore the intricacies of the human condition with a unique blend of sensitivity and wit. I often delve into dark and complex themes, addressing vulnerability, resilience, and the unspoken, while balancing these heavy subjects with delicate details that invite reflection and connection. I celebrate the power of contradictions in my art: strength in fragility, beauty in imperfection, and laughter in sorrow. Through embroidery, I transform traditionally feminine crafts into a medium for profound storytelling, blending softness with raw emotional depth. Humor—sometimes cheeky, sometimes sardonic—is a key element in my work, serving as a bridge to connect with difficult topics in an approachable way. Cultural humility is central to my practice. I embrace the diverse narratives that shape our shared humanity, incorporating layered symbolism to honor the stories of others while maintaining a thoughtful awareness of my own perspective. This reflects my belief in the importance of listening and learning, values deeply rooted in my background in clinical social work. I love pushing the boundaries of fiber arts by experimenting with mixed media to expand my creative vocabulary. By combining embroidery with materials like dried flowers, paint, upcycled clothing, and wire, I challenge the conventions of my craft and invite viewers to see fiber art in a new light. Each piece is a testament to my commitment to innovation and my passion for storytelling through texture and form. With Magpie Embroidery, I create art that is as intricate and multifaceted as the human experience itself. My work reminds us that even in the darkest corners of our psyche, there is room for beauty, humor, and connection.
