Artist Statement
I explore the intersection of death, apocalypse, and human nature through works of graphite on paper. I am drawn to imagery rooted in fenced cemeteries, chaotic oceans, and abandoned houses: places touched by humans but lacking their presence. The ideation of my work starts with constructing a model from loose drawings, 3-D printed objects, and scraps of cardboard. I arrange these images and set pieces until I find a satisfying composition to be a reference for the drawing. I use a mix of water-soluble graphite, graphite pencils, and graphite sticks to recreate my reference image. The monochromatic quality of the graphite increases the drama of each model and calls attention to their themes of death, religion, and the macabre.
