About

Gene Lord’s creative journey began in childhood, rooted in a lifelong passion for visual expression through drawing and painting. This early foundation in the arts eventually led him to the lathe, where he traded brushes and pencils for gouges and chisels. Over the last five years, he has successfully translated his artistic eye into the world of woodturning, specializing in handcrafted, functional art such as bespoke pens, salt and pepper shakers, and elegant bowls. Gene’s process is defined by his love for the organic unpredictability of his materials. He finds a unique thrill in the "reveal"—that pivotal moment when the final finish is applied and the wood’s hidden patterns and secret history are brought to the surface. While his early days were spent on two-dimensional surfaces, he now finds his greatest joy in the three-dimensional transformation of raw timber, celebrating the fact that while he can plan a shape, the wood ultimately decides the final, one-of-a-kind look.

Artist Statement

My work is a celebration of the "reveal"—that pivotal, unscripted moment when the lathe stops and a final finish brings a wood’s hidden history to the surface. While I began my creative life with drawing and painting, I found my true voice in the three-dimensional transformation of raw timber. I am driven by the organic unpredictability of my materials, finding deep satisfaction in the fact that while I can plan a shape, the wood ultimately decides the final, unique character of every piece. Through the creation of bespoke pens, salt and pepper shakers, and elegant bowls, I strive to bridge the gap between fine art and everyday functionality. Every item is a one-of-a-kind exploration of grain and texture, designed to bring the natural beauty of the outdoors into the hands of the user. For me, woodturning is an act of discovery, honoring the journey from a rough, weathered block to a polished, high-luster finished product.
